Osteoporosis

Reading a Braille with Doctor

Osteoporosis is a common condition that affects thousands, or even millions, of people across the world. It’s defined as weakness of the bones or a problem with the mineralization of bones. The complications of osteoporosis are numerous. At Dr. Sayyed, we see patients with osteoporosis a lot. Some benefit from the treatments we can provide along with prescription drugs.

If you have osteoporosis, you’re at serious risk of getting a serious bone fracture. These fractures, especially in old age, can flip a person’s life upside down. Getting something as serious as a hip fracture and needing a replacement could be debilitating.

Our goal at Dr. Sayyed, Burr Ridge, La Grange, Hinsdale, Chicago, is to help identify those at risk of having osteoporosis, helping treat them, and referring them to the right physicians. The treatment of osteoporosis can be accomplished through multiple people working on the same team.

Risk Factors and Diagnosis of Osteoporosis

Postmenopausal women are at a high risk of getting osteoporosis. The risk is increased even further for those who are thin and don’t get much exercise. Additionally, not getting enough calcium and vitamin D also play a role.

Men can get osteoporosis too, but less frequently than women. They usually have stronger bones compared to women due to hormonal differences.

Osteoporosis is diagnosed using what is known as a DEXA scan. Getting a certain score on the scan is how a diagnosis of osteoporosis is made. There’s no other way to diagnose it. Once a diagnosis is established, it’s important to begin treatment as soon as possible, or else the risk of fractures increases.

Treatment of Osteoporosis

Those who have osteoporosis or are at risk for it will require treatment. The earlier treatment begins, the better the prognosis. Doctors often prescribe vitamin D and calcium for those with osteoporosis. Drugs like bisphosphonates can also be used.

At Dr. Sayyed, we can participate in the treatment of your osteoporosis. We can help provide you with exercises that strengthen your bones without putting too much stress on them. We can also help those who already had fractures to regain their normal functions and be able to gradually walk again.
